In detail

What is GCSE?

GCSE is the main secondary-level qualification in the UK, usually taken across Years 10 and 11 by students aged roughly 14 to 16. Students study a mix of compulsory subjects — English, Maths and Science — alongside options they choose based on interest and future goals.

Each subject is graded on the 9–1 scale, with 9 being the highest. Strong GCSE grades open the door to AS and A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate and vocational pathways, and are looked at closely by universities and employers later on.
